From the Street to the Screen: Reader Engagement with Vernacular Texts

This article establishes a connection between Spanish chapbook literature and digital infotainment texts, as both are considered vernacular due to their wide readership. The starting point is the assumption that these texts are called vernacular because of their visual design and content, which incorporates the implicit participation of their readers. A comparative methodological approach was taken, using three axes of analysis: accumulation, archiving and construction. The findings were that implicit participation imposes specific tasks on the reader, such as recognizing the references with which the texts were constructed, their role as co-editor and disseminator of content, and their ability to flow with the text. This comparative study highlights the continuity of implicit reader participation from the 16th century to the present day.
